What is a Safety Person?

Vulnerability, honesty, and trust. Do these words come to mind when you think of your closest friends? Are you able to confide in them about deep and personal things?

A person who shows sympathy is someone who makes you feel warm and cared for. They don’t like to see the ones they care about hurt and sad.  They do whatever they can to bring you comfort and support.

Reasons You Need to Know Why Safety People Are Special

These people are special because they provide crucial support and comfort to everyone around them. They ensure that all individuals feel safe and protected in their surroundings. We can develop a stronger bond of trust with them when we connect with them on a deeper level.

They also play a vital role in safeguarding our well-being. Therefore, we must recognize and appreciate their significance.  These are the kind of people who light our world when it’s dark, warm our hearts when we’re cold, and stand by us when we’re going through tough times.

What You Need to Know About These People

You may think you are being a burden to this kind of people by dumping your troubles onto them especially if you’ve done it before. You may think you’re damaging the friendship and that eventually, you’ll lose them. If you have thought this way before, you are not alone. I’ve been there myself.

A safe person is good for 4 different things.  They show up for you, they are great listeners, they respect your boundaries, and they make you feel seen and heard. Keep in mind this kind of person doesn’t come along every day.

I would say you should consider yourself lucky if you do have someone like this in your life.  Now dive in a bit deeper and look at these 4 traits in more detail:

Someone Who Consistently Shows Up for You’

Firstly, this person is someone who consistently shows up for you. They are reliable, always there to offer support and assistance when you need it the most.

It doesn’t take someone with an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree to develop a generous heart. These people are the ones who are always there, no matter the situation or circumstance. They make a conscious effort to support and be there for us, even during challenging times.

These individuals are reliable, and their presence brings comfort and stability into our lives. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or partner, their consistent support and presence mean the world to us. We know we can always count on them to be there for us, and that is a truly special and invaluable bond to have.

They are a Great Listener

Secondly, the individual is a great listener. They genuinely listen to your concerns and worries without judgment, providing a safe space for you to share your thoughts and feelings.

Whenever you have something on your mind, these kinds of people are there with open ears. They create a safe and comfortable space for you to share your thoughts and feelings. When you talk, they actively engage, nodding and making eye contact, showing that he values what you have to say.

They don’t interrupt or try to steer the conversation towards themselves. Instead, they ask thoughtful questions that encourage you to delve deeper and express yourself more fully. Their presence and attentiveness make you feel heard and understood, leaving you refreshed and grateful for their empathetic listening skills.

They Respect Your Boundaries

Thirdly, this person will respect your boundaries. They understand and honor your limits, never pressuring you into doing something that makes you uncomfortable.

It is essential to be surrounded by people who respect your boundaries. When others understand your limits, it fosters a sense of trust and safety within any relationship. This mutual respect allows you to feel comfortable and secure, knowing that your needs and boundaries will not be violated.

When people respect your boundaries, it shows that they value your individuality and autonomy. It demonstrates their understanding that everyone is entitled to their limits and preferences. This type of respect promotes healthy communication and fosters a positive and harmonious environment.

Ultimately, being surrounded by people who respect your boundaries contributes to your overall well-being and enhances the quality of your relationships.

They Make You Feel Seen and Heard

Lastly, this individual is someone who makes you feel seen and heard. They validate your emotions and experiences, making you feel understood and valued. If you have someone in your life who exhibits these qualities, consider yourself fortunate to have this person who truly cares about your well-being.

Being seen and heard is a fundamental requirement for individuals in any setting. It not only contributes to one’s emotional well-being but also has implications for their overall health and safety. When an individual feels seen and heard, it implies that their thoughts, feelings, and opinions are acknowledged.

This sense of validation promotes a positive self-image and enhances self-esteem. Furthermore, it enables effective communication, fostering trust and understanding in relationships. Moreover, being seen and heard ensures that one’s needs and concerns are addressed in personal or professional settings.

It solidifies a support system and promotes a sense of belonging, which is crucial for mental and emotional well-being.

Key Considerations to Know When It Comes to a Safety Person

When it comes to a safe person, there are key considerations that one should keep in mind. First, it is essential to ensure the safety and health of oneself and others. While it is admirable to be sympathetic, it is important not to neglect personal safety or put oneself in harm’s way. Therefore, setting boundaries and knowing when to take a step back is crucial.

Additionally, it is important to gain an understanding of the person’s situation before offering sympathy or assistance. This understanding allows for a more empathetic and informed response, rather than a superficial one. Taking the time to listen and ask questions can provide valuable insight into the person’s needs and concerns.

Moreover, getting to know the individual on a personal level builds trust and a deeper connection, which can be beneficial for both parties involved. Sympathy is not merely a one-off act, but rather an ongoing effort to provide support and understanding. Therefore, investing time and effort into building a relationship with the person can contribute to a more effective and meaningful exchange of sympathy.

By considering these key factors, one can become a more compassionate and supportive individual in the lives of others.

Taking it to the Next Level: How to Become a Sympathetic Person

Becoming a sympathetic person requires a conscious effort to develop empathy and understanding toward others. To start, it is crucial to actively listen to people when they are sharing their experiences and emotions. Taking the time to understand their perspectives without judgment can help deepen the connection and create a safe space for them to express themselves.

Additionally, practicing kindness and patience can go a long way in showing support and compassion. Showing genuine concern and offering assistance when needed can also help foster sympathy. Lastly, it is important to educate oneself about different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences to cultivate a broader understanding of human emotions and struggles.

Alternatives Ideas to Know

One of the key things is to not be disrespectful to these kinds of people. They sacrifice their energy and time and go out of their way to help you and comfort you.  Could they be doing something else with their time of course they can.

Like you, they also may feel down and sad and need someone to talk to.  They need to be vulnerable and open up to someone and they may just come to you.  If so, you now have a place to start and know what 4 things you should do as mentioned above.

Another thing to remember is that these kinds of people are not all therapists or professionals in mental health.  If after talking to them and you still feel bad, then consider seeking professional help.  I have years of experience with these kinds of people.

Wrap Up

There is a deep connection and understanding between people who are vulnerable to one another. You get to know someone in how they think, how they handle their emotions, and how they view life. They provide you comfort when you feel fragile, confused, hurt, and broken.

Sometimes they give you words of encouragement, a hug, a shoulder to cry on, and even a listening ear for you to vent. In reality, these kinds of people are easier to go to and confide in than our parents.  In my opinion, this shouldn’t be a thing, but it is.

These kinds of people you can confide in shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some of the worst and toughest moments of your life are made a bit easier to deal with these kinds of people around. If you have these kinds of friends in your life, you should consider yourself grateful.

You are not alone in this world; these kinds of friends will remind you of that. Take care, stay safe, and remember you are not alone, and you have worth in this world.
